I’m used to muscle cars, hot rods, and old pickups, so this Honda thing is still a little new. I’m not an idiot when it comes to mechanics though, I know what I’m doing, I just don’t have the insight with foreign cars as I do with American built. Anyways what motor would be best? Here are some things I am taking into consideration:
I am a college student, so money isn’t extremely plentiful (but I am saving with my 40mpg now)
I want the swap to be fairly simple, with no major complications. A d series would be ideal, but I wouldn’t mind going through a little extra hassle if it got me a bit more power!
Should I go SOHC or DOHC?
Obviously want a vtec.. lol
Also, a motor that would have a good possibility of turbo-ing down the road.
Well with all of those in mind, hit me up with suggestions! Thanks guys!
No "fairly simple" swap exist unless you use the same engine, which is useless for what you look for, even a very small engine change, you will need several change in engine management (ECU), so not cheap, Turbo is in my opinion out of range for you right now, its going to cost $5000 USD, maybe more than the car is worth.
You can use a car performance simulator (NxGTR Sim) to virtually tune your car and run performance test to see how the car would improve in real life, try at http://goo.gl/5GDa2
Since Honda Civics had a very similar chassis from 88-00 it would be fairly simple to swap in a d-series from a newer Civic. A good option to look into would be a d16z6 or d16y8, they are a 1.6 liter SOHC VTEC 16 valve that make about 125-130 hp stock, and that amount of hp in that light of a vehicle would be fairly quick, plus it would still give you pretty good mpg. They are fairly easy motors to find as the d16z6 was in plenty of Civics up until about 1996, and up until 2000, the y8 was put in a lot of them. They are good motors, however if you are looking to Turbo, you may want to consider a non-vtec build.
For more power you may look into DOHC B-series. These were put in various top-trim Civics and Integras and the chassis were similar, so just like the d16z6 or y8 the swap would not require any custom modifications or fabrications as you should be able to find factory motor mounts and shift linkage that will fit on your hatch. The B16′s were all vtec and make anywhere from 160-180 hp depending on the model (b16a1,b16a3,b16b1,etc.,) but they are a bit more expensive than a D-series. If you want to go turbo down the road I would recommend a b18a1 or b18b1 from an integra, as they are non-vtec and at a good compression ratio for turbo applications. Since they are fairly plentiful they are pretty cheap and easy to find. They should make about 140 hp stock without a turbo which is still good power for your car.
